Create a regional coordinating steward, implement an integrated payment system, and a regional bus network redesign to create a more efficient and easy to use system.

Measure and Report on Success

Adopt and publish uniform data standards to allow the successes and challenges of the bus to be better understood by providers, elected officials, and advocates.

Bus Campaign Goals

Grow Bus Ridership: Success would be a system growing in ridership. The campaign’s priority tactics can retain and attract riders to reverse ridership decline. By 2025, MetroNow believes the bus network can serve more than 800,000 riders per week day.

Faster Bus Speeds: Today, buses are stuck in regular traffic despite being the most efficient vehicles on the road. With more dedicated bus lanes, queue jumps, and transit signal priority at intersections the region’s buses can travel faster than today’s average of 10mph. By 2025, MetroNow believes the bus network can reach an average speed of 12 mph.

Better Reliability: Without prioritization, buses are easily delayed and riders are frustrated by not arriving on time. Reliability can attract riders and improves lives. By 2025, MetroNow believes the bus network can reach an average on-schedule rate of 90%.

2025 Tactical Targets

Prioritize Buses on Roads around the region with 60+ miles of dedicated bus lanes, 100+ intersections with queue jumps, and 600+ intersections with transit signal priority technology to help buses move faster and more reliably.

Implement Equitable Fare Policies by establishing free transfers between bus and rail, regional fare capping, and reduced transit fares for low income household to create a more equitable and user friendly system.

Improve Regional Coordination by empowering a regional steward to help coordinate efforts, implement an integrated payment system across providers, and adopt a regional network redesign to maximize the regional network.

Measure and Report on Success by adopting and publishing uniform data standards for all bus providers in the region. Data should be broken down by individual bus routes, providers, and jurisdictions to help the region better understand the successes and challenges of creating a better bus system.
